Being Mary
Mary Johnson Van Den Berge is a "wear your heart on your sleeve" kind of woman, an unapologetic bookworm, and an online shopping champion. She devours murder mysteries in every form — whether in books or podcasts — with an enthusiasm that surprises even herself. Raised on a farm near St. Marys in Southwestern Ontario, she now calls Petrolia home, nestled in Ontario’s scenic “banana belt.”
Mary is a proud advocate for women’s rights and believes deeply in the power of honest conversation. On her podcast, she creates a safe and open space for women to explore the emotional layers of life—through candid conversations about relationships, identity, healing, motherhood, and more. It’s not just her story anymore—it’s all of ours.
Being Mary
My 69th Birthday
This week’s episode of Being Mary is a special one — a reflection as I turn 69.
It’s been a year of growth, loss, laughter, and new beginnings.
From publishing my memoir to launching this podcast, from road trips and friendships to moments of deep reflection — 68 taught me a lot about resilience and gratitude.
I share why these conversations mean so much to me, and how each episode helps me live a little braver and love a little deeper.
Here’s to embracing life — all of it — as I step into another year with an open heart. 💛

Turning 69 – A Year of Growth and Gratitude
Well, here I am — turning 69 this week.
And I’ve been doing a little reflecting on 68… what a year it’s been!
It started with a trip to the Dominican in the winter, then a summer road trip to Cape Breton with a good friend, and now I’ve got a solo trip coming up to Jamaica with a group called Rustic Mamas.
If you’ve never heard of them, look them up — they do women’s getaways all over Ontario and even offer a few travel adventures each year. They’re such a great way to meet new women and, honestly, to reconnect with yourself. I will attach their link in the description.
This past year was also a big one for me creatively.
I launched my first book — Being Mary — my memoir.
In a nutshell, it’s a story about resilience, grace, and the surprising ways life gives us second chances. You can find it on Amazon if you’d like to read the whole thing. I’ll attached that link as well.
And because I can never seem to do just one thing at a time — I also started this podcast!
Being Mary — the podcast — grew out of the same place the book did.
I’ve always believed that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, to speak your truth, and to help other women realize they’re not alone — whether in their struggles or in their victories.
People sometimes tell me they listen because the episodes encourage them… and I love that.
But honestly? I do these podcasts for me, too.
Every topic I talk about is something I need to hear myself. It helps me keep learning, keep loving who I am, and keep living life as fully as I can.
You know, It’s also been a hard year in some ways. I’ve lost a few friends to cancer, which has been tough. It’s one of the reasons I decided that all profits from Being Mary will go to the Verspeeten Cancer Centre in London — in memory of those dear friends who left us too soon.
So as I look ahead to 69 — and toward that big number 70 — I don’t have a solid plan yet.
But I do know this: I’m open to whatever adventures life wants to bring my way.
My goal is to have at least 30 more birthdays to celebrate — and I plan to make every one of them count.
Here’s to another year of growth, gratitude, and maybe just a little bit of mischief along the way.
